How to Create a Mold Free Room

Here are several easy steps for making sure that your room stays mold free.
check for mold
  • Check for Humid Areas - Check each area in your room where there is a high possibility of mold growing. Inspect places that have high humidity level, or any space that water can slip in. Molds can easily grow on wood surfaces that are soaking wet. Make sure to inspect your whole home as well for water leaks especially the areas where most of your water pipes are hidden. If there is indeed a leak, fix it immediately. If you have a room that has a higher humidity, purchase a dehumidifier. The dehumidifier will help reduce the moisture levels to a normal level. However, make sure you have a large enough dehumidifier for the area it is being used for. Larger areas can require a large capacity dehumidifier such as the Santa Fe Classic. Comprehensive Mold Management is an Official Dealer of Santa Fe.
  • Conduct a General Cleaning - Although, this may not have a large impact it can still aid in the overall prevention of mold growth in your room. Make sure to declutter any areas, by getting rid of extra papers and old documents that are not needed as they can be common culprit for mold growth. Inspect older furniture or other organic materials that may be in poor condition. Get rid of unnecessary items, to have a more open and clean room. If you have indoor plants, make sure to keep them well maintained and check for mold growth under the pots or in the soil.
  • Air Conditioning Maintenance - Keep your air conditioner maintained in a good and clean condition. Air conditioners are designed to dehumidify as they cool the room and filter the air. The air filtering process disrupts mold spores from growing and spreading in the room. Change your filter on a regular schedule.
  • Vacuum Carpets - Keep your carpets cleaned on a weekly basis. This can also be the source of mold growth because of the moisture absorbed by the carpet from a week old stain. If you have spill on a carpet make sure to dry out the area ASAP, press down on a towel until the towel comes up dry then use a fan to dry the spot. The area needs to be completely dried out within 24-48 hours to ensure there is no mold growth. A professional carpet cleaning service should be used at least once a year to deep clean your carpets. This eliminates mold spores that your regular vacuum cleaner may not be able to remove.
  • Let The Sunlight In - Molds prefer the dark spaces and cold areas of your room to grow in. By making sure that sunlight reaches most areas of your room, you have nothing to worry about. It reduces the chance of mold spores spreading and mildew growing. In the morning, make sure to open your curtains so that sunlight can warm up your room.
