Warning Signs
One of the major concerns, in regards to mold growth inside of residential properties is the health effects on the residents. It is pretty easy to determine if mold is present when there is visible spotting or an ongoing moisture issue. However, it is best to catch an issue prior to mold growing or early on prior to it impacting your health and becoming a major problem. There are warning signs to look out for, including the smell, discoloration, condensation, other structural issues and rapid growth of mold on normal household items.



“Moldy” Smell
A key indicator that mold is present is its distinctive musty smell. The musty smell alone does not mean that you have mold, however you should have it looked at by a professional. The smells given off by mold at certain stages of their growth and reproduction are called Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOCs). It is a combination of various chemicals that are being released by the organism as it eats, grows, and multiplies. The “smell of mold” has been described as damp, clammy, earthy, mildewy, musty, rank, old, as well as many other descriptors.
Physical Signs
The smell alone is not a direct indicator that you have mold in your home, however you should have it evaluated by a mold professional. Do you see any dark discoloration around your ceiling lines, corners or flooring? Discoloration or spotting is a strong sign that you have mold growth. Check for condensation on your windows, this indicates that you have a moisture issue inside of your home. In addition, peeling paint or wallpaper, loose tiles or flooring. There are many others, however these are some of the main ones to look out for.
Mold Growth on Items
Another sign to watch out for is mold growth on other items inside of your home, more so the amount of time it takes for the mold to grow. For example, fuzzy mold growth on drinks left out overnight, flower vases that grow slime within a few days to a week, dark buildup appearing in the bathroom (toilet, shower or sink that appears within a day or so from cleaning.) These are normally key signs that you have a mold issue and best to take care of it sooner rather than later, before it becomes a bigger issue.
