Why Mold Proofing Your Home is a Worthwhile Investment

As a homeowner, there are endless projects and ways that you would rather spend your money, however by mold proofing your home is one of the most worthwhile investments you can make. One of the best ways to deal with mold in the home is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Comprehensive Mold Management has helped many area homeowners and businesses avoid mold problems by preventing them all together. Mold can be not only destructive to your home, but also impact your family’s health. By taking a proactive approach, it will not only save you money, but help protect your home and family.

Utilizing our experience and technology, we can detect and treat areas that are susceptible to mold growth, thus preventing the costlier expense of removing the threat after it happens. We can identify and correct structural or environmental problems before they become the cause of mold. People purchasing a new home are encouraged to mold-proof their property. Home inspectors sometimes miss detecting mold and the buyer is left to deal with the expense of removal and repair.

Why Should I Mold Proof My Home?

Mold can begin growing unexpectedly. You may not even realize that you have a current mold problem or the conditions for mold growth to occur. Mold can occur throughout any area of your home, however common areas are attics and basements, which we do not inspect regularly. Once a mold issue has took root it can be difficult to remove. Mold remediation can be costly, and the longer the problem persists, the more expensive the removal will be.

Mold Prevention is Cheaper than Mold Remediation

Mold proofing is a relatively simple step that can be taken and is a preventative measure that can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. By having a mold professional evaluate your home for areas with potential moisture problems and by applying a professional mold proof coating. At Comprehensive Mold Management they offer a Lifetime Warranty* wherever their mold proof coating is applied. This can provide peace of mind knowing you will be protected in the future.

Protect Your Home & Your Health

Mold remediation can become quite costly, depending on the amount you have and other factors. In addition to the cost to remediate the mold, the value of your home can be drastically impacted. If you choose to sell your home, mold can be a setback in selling your home, especially if it not remediated by a licensed mold professional. If documentation can be shown that is was remediated by a licensed mold professional, then the new homeowner should not have anything to worry about. Especially, if they offer a transferrable warranty, which Comprehensive Mold Management offers.
Although money and your home are important, your health and your family’s take top priority. Mold can lead to serious health issues. Depending on a person’s sensitivity and immune system is can impact certain people for several years or even the rest of their life. Mold proofing is a great solution to keep your family safe.

Take Control of the Environment

Mold can grow regardless of the temperature, but mold does grow best in warm temperatures with high humidity. You can help control the environment in your home to help prevent mold from growing. By keeping the temperature in the low 70’s and the humidity below 45%. Keep doors and windows closed when it is hot outside. Run your air conditioner (if possible) and dehumidifier to aid in keeping your home cool and dry.

Borax Versus Bleach

Borax versus Bleach

Should you clean mold yourself?

We do not recommend for customers to clean mold themselves, unless cleaning it from an item such as clothing or a non-porous item. For areas inside of your home greater than 10 square feet, make sure to contact a professional to handle this for you. It is imperative to not only remove the mold properly, but also rectify the moisture problem. Also, a professional can make sure the proper containment is set up to ensure that the mold spores do not spread to other areas of the home.

There is generally quite the misconception when it comes to cleaning mold yourself. People tend to think they need to use Bleach to clean mold, when it is the exact opposite. Bleach will change the color of your mold to a clear and/or white color, as it would your clothing. Unfortunately, all you have done is to create a biosphere for the mold to grow in and you may have possibly ingested the bleach fumes & airborne mold spores (never healthy). Usually, within three to four months, the mold will return and do so with a vengeance.

What is Borax?

The only product that we recommend to our customers to use in order to remove mold is Borax. We NEVER recommend using Bleach. Borax is unique in the fact that it is a naturally occurring substance.
Borax is a common ingredient in detergents and cosmetics. It is prized for its effectiveness as a cleanser and deodorizer.

What Are the Advantages to Using Borax?

  • Borax is helpful as a mold killer because of its natural anti-fungal properties.
  • Borax is chemical-free, does not emit harmful gases, and is significantly safer than other mold killing products.
  • Borax has can be used for multiple purposes including a detergent and cleanser. It is inexpensive and available at most local grocery stores.
  • Borax is not harmful to the environment, in comparison to bleach and other mold cleaning products.

Why Should I Not Use Bleach?

  • Bleach does not kill all types of mold.
  • Bleach only disinfects the area.
  • Bleach has a shelf life of approximately one year, dependent upon the storage conditions.
  • Bleach is a caustic substance. We Do Not Recommend Its Use in Any Circumstance

What to Look Out For When Searching For a Mold Remediation Company

What to Look Out for When Searching For a

Mold Remediation Company

There are many different tactics and sales techniques used when trying to sell home improvement projects such as mold removal. Mold remediation can be a costly expense and you want to make sure that you are hiring an honest, legitimate and experienced company. It is not a project where you just want to go with the cheapest quote, you do not want to cut costs for quality. Here are some tips to keep in mind and questions to ask when searching for a Rochester Environmental or Mold Remediation company:

Ask how many employees work for the company. (You want to check they have staff in house that can complete the mold work versus subcontracting it out.)
Verify the number of years that they have been in business and the number of years they have been conducting mold remediation. (Many companies have recently just started offering mold remediation. You want to make sure that you are hiring a company that has experience with this type of work, to ensure it is done properly.)
Check to make sure that they are fully ensured and can provide a certificate of insurance.
Conduct a thorough background check by checking online reviews through the BBB, Angie’s List and other reputable sources that can provide reviews and insight into the company.
Beware of scare tactics. Saying things like; “You Have a Big Problem Here!”  or “Your home isn't safe or healthy to be in.” before they've even done a thorough visual inspection or tested for mold.
Ask the contractor for references from customers that have had similar projects completed.
Watch out for mold removal companies that only take care of the mold. The quote may be cheaper upfront, but if the moisture issue isn’t resolved, you may face a more severe problem down the road. Comprehensive Mold Management does all the work start to finish. We take care of the moisture issue, remove the mold, and complete any other necessary work that is required.
Inquire to make sure that the company offers a warranty. With cheaper quotes, sometimes there is no warranty associated with the mold remediation. Our work may not be the cheapest, but we do the work correctly. We follow industry standard protocol, so any work we complete is covered with a lifetime warranty* where our mold proof coating is applied.
Beware of companies that do not follow the proper standards or protocol, having a need for less materials. Comprehensive Mold Management is fully ensured, a NYS licensed mold remediation contractor and CMM always uses the best materials available. We use the highest quality materials available to insure the job is done correctly.
